Georgia gas rates: seven fell since last October, but annual estimates rose

Two calendar sheets with gas flames above a meter, beside different stacks of coins.

Seven of nine comparable standard 12-month fixed gas rates fell between October 2025 and October 2026. Yet all nine annual cost estimates on Open Natural Gas rose. The median rate change was a decrease of 5 cents per therm; the median annual estimate increased by $36.78.

That is possible because the Georgia Public Service Commission’s comparison assumptions changed. The newer chart uses more annual gas consumption and a higher Atlanta Gas Light base charge. An annual estimate measures more than the marketer’s gas price.

We matched the same nine marketers across the two October filings. This is a comparison of filed plans and calculated examples, not a survey of actual household bills.

What happened to the fixed rates?

Paired bars show October 2025 and October 2026 fixed rates for nine matched marketers. Seven rates fell; Stream and Xoom rose by one cent per therm.

The table is alphabetical. Annual estimate changes use each year’s PSC consumption and base-charge assumptions, with the site’s signup service-charge convention.

Marketer October 2025 rate October 2026 rate Change in annual estimate
Constellation $0.889/therm $0.839/therm +$36.78
Fuel Georgia $0.700/therm $0.650/therm +$31.49
Gas South $0.690/therm $0.670/therm +$50.44
Georgia Natural Gas $0.749/therm $0.679/therm +$20.04
SCANA $0.749/therm $0.699/therm +$32.86
Stream $0.649/therm $0.659/therm +$68.52
True Natural Gas $0.709/therm $0.681/therm +$45.84
Walton EMC $0.799/therm $0.719/therm +$15.03
Xoom $0.649/therm $0.659/therm +$68.52

These are standard filed prices. Advertised promotions, senior plans and other contract lengths are outside this comparison. The current Georgia comparison shows annual costs, service charges and plan restrictions together.

The assumptions changed, too

Annual comparison assumption October 2025 October 2026 Change
Gas consumption 613 therms 641 therms +28 therms
AGL base charge $536.59 $580.53 +$43.94

The site’s annual estimate is gas rate × annual therms, plus 12 monthly service charges, plus the annual AGL base charge. Where a service-charge range is filed, we use the explicit signup charge; otherwise we use the high end. This can differ from the PSC PDF’s own total when the PDF uses the high end of a range.

The signup service charges did not change for these nine matched plans. Holding usage at 613 therms and keeping the same base charge for both years, the median annual change would have been a decrease of $30.65. That isolates the filed rate and service-charge changes from the changed comparison assumptions.

The additional 28 therms are a change to the chart’s example. They do not show that a particular household used more gas.

One example: Fuel Georgia

Fuel Georgia’s fixed rate fell from $0.700 to $0.650 per therm, while its $6 monthly signup service charge stayed the same. Our annual estimate rose from $1,037.69 to $1,069.18, an increase of $31.49:

Together: −$30.65 + $18.20 + $43.94 = +$31.49. The marketer’s unit price went down; the annual example still went up. For the delivery portion, see how Atlanta Gas Light charges work.

How to use this when shopping

Compare plans using the same usage level, service-charge rule and delivery-charge assumptions. A current table does that within a month. Comparing annual totals from different years requires checking whether the assumptions changed first.

If you are deciding between fixed and variable, our October fixed-versus-variable analysis compares those prices within the same month. It does not predict next year’s variable bills.

Sources and method

Sources: the PSC’s October 2025 fixed chart and October 2026 fixed chart, rechecked October 8, 2026. You can also inspect our October 2025 archive and monthly rate history.

We select one standard 12-month fixed row per marketer in each month, choosing the lowest annual estimate when there is more than one eligible row, then match marketer names. We exclude regulated-provider plans, withheld rows, missing prices and offers restricted entirely to existing customers. Town Square has a current eligible standard row, but its October 2025 fixed offer was filed under Other Plans. It has no matching standard-section row that month, so it is not part of this nine-marketer comparison.

Eligibility still varies: Walton’s fixed offer is limited to Metro Atlanta; SCANA’s 2025 row also carried delivery-group restrictions. True Natural Gas’s Rome-area restriction applies to existing-customer eligibility there. A matched row does not mean everyone can enroll in it.
