Methodology and disclosures

Every comparison site says it is neutral. This one is set up so you do not have to take that on faith: the data is a public filing that every page links to, the parsed values are published so any row can be checked against it, and the ranking is one formula printed below. Open Natural Gas is not paid by any marketer and no marketer can pay for placement. If any of that stops being true, the site is broken.

Where the numbers come from

All rates come from the Georgia Public Service Commission's Marketers Pricing Index, where every certificated marketer files its rates each month. The PSC publishes four charts as PDFs. Nothing on this site is collected from marketers, submitted by marketers, or estimated by us. The current data is the October 2026 filing.

Month page: https://psc.ga.gov/utilities/natural-gas/marketers-pricing-index/october-2026/. This month's charts:

What each field on the rate tables means.
FieldMeaning
MarketerThe marketer's name and, where the PSC names one, the specific plan. The regulated provider (SCANA's regulated division, filed as Regulated Provider Group 1 and 2) is left off the comparison tables: it serves customers assigned to it, not shoppers. Its rates have their own page, /georgia/regulated-provider/, and its rows remain in rates.json as filed.
Rate per thermThe rate the marketer filed with the PSC for this month, in dollars per therm.
Customer service chargeThe marketer's own fixed monthly charge, on top of the gas. Where a marketer files a range, the charge a new customer pays at sign-up is shown, with a note under the table saying when the other end applies.
TermHow many months the rate is held, for fixed plans.
Estimated annual costWhat a year costs at the PSC's usage assumption, including the service charge and the Atlanta Gas Light base charge.
Early termination feeWhat the marketer charges to leave the plan early, as filed.
Effective dateThe date the filed rate took effect.
PSC complaints, 24 moHow many complaints the PSC logged against the marketer on its Gas Marketer Scorecard over the last 24 published months. A raw count, not per customer, and never part of the ranking.

How to check these numbers

Every number on this site is copied from a PSC chart, and every page links to the PSC month it came from. To check a row, open that month on the PSC site, open the matching chart PDF (fixed, variable, senior or prepay), and compare the rate, service charge, effective date and early termination fee to the row here. The parsed values for the current month are published as rates.json and rates.md, and every month we have ever published is in one file as history.csv, so the comparison can be done by hand or by script for any month, not just this one. All three, with the licence and how to cite them, are on the data page. An automated sanity gate refuses to publish a month whose parse does not match the chart's own structure; those months are listed on the history page rather than shown.

Audit us in five minutes

If you would rather not take any of the above on trust, this is the shortest route to checking it. It needs no tools beyond a browser, and it is the same route we would use to check a competitor.

  1. Pick any row in the current table and note the marketer, the rate, the service charge and the estimated annual cost.
  2. Open the PSC chart linked under that table. It is the Commission's own PDF, on the Commission's own site, not a copy hosted here.
  3. Find the same marketer on the PDF and compare the rate, service charge, term, effective date and early termination fee. They should match exactly.
  4. Redo the arithmetic. Estimated annual cost is the rate times 641 therms, plus the sign-up service charge times 12, plus the Atlanta Gas Light base charge of $580.53. There is no other term in the formula.
  5. Check the ordering. Sort our table by annual cost and confirm the cheapest really is first. Nothing else moves a row: not a payment, not a relationship, not a rating.

To audit the whole archive rather than one row, history.csv holds every plan from every month since 2019 in one file, and each month has its own page linking its own PSC chart. Rows our gate refused to rank are in the file carrying the reason, rather than dropped.

If a figure here disagrees with the PSC chart it links to, the chart is right. Tell us at [email protected] and we will correct it and say what changed.

How Georgia natural gas plans are ranked

Plans are ranked by estimated total annual cost, cheapest first, and by nothing else. The formula, in full:

Total annual cost = rate × the PSC's therm assumption + the customer service charge × 12 + the Atlanta Gas Light annual base charge. Ties break by service charge, then by name. No other factor.

Where a marketer files a range of customer service charges rather than one figure, the charge a new customer actually pays at sign-up is used, and shown, with a note under the table. Gas South and Georgia Natural Gas charge the low end unless a credit assessment or payment history says otherwise, and True Natural Gas charges the high end. Those sign-up ends come from the notes filed on the PSC chart, and both ends of the range are published in rates.json. A range with no such note is costed on its high end, the PSC's own method for its published bill, and shown as a range. True Rewards does not change the charge used here. The marketer's current program is a per-therm loyalty discount, not the $0.50 service-charge reduction still described in the PSC chart note, so that reduction is not applied to the cost or the ranking. The note under the table states the current terms.

The same formula is applied to every plan on every chart. The PSC publishes a Total Annual Bill of its own on some charts; it is kept in the data as psc_annual_bill and is never ranked on, because the PSC computes it on a different basis on the pre-pay chart (there, its monthly and annual totals leave out the Atlanta Gas Light base charge its own footnote says they include; see the prepay page) and mixing two bases inside one ranked table would order plans by which basis happened to be available. Pre-pay plans billed as a flat monthly amount file no per-therm rate, so they show no estimated annual cost and sort last.

For October 2026 the PSC's assumption is 641 therms a year and the Atlanta Gas Light annual base charge is $580.53. There is no editorial score, no partner weighting, and no way to buy a position. Your own usage is not the PSC's assumption, so treat the ranking as a like-for-like comparison rather than a quote.

Plain and conditional advertised offers

Advertised offers sit beside the filed ranking and never change it. Within the advertised table, an offer is conditional when its price depends on something that changes it later: an add-on or bundle the customer must stay enrolled in, a bill credit or reward that ends, a rate that steps up after a set number of bills, a discount that needs autopay or paperless billing, or a usage minimum or prepayment. Eligibility alone (new customers, a promo code, a service area) does not make an offer conditional. Every other offer is plain.

The same rule applies to every marketer. Conditional offers are listed after the plain ones, are never the "lowest" offer named in the text above the table, and show the cost of a year once the introductory period has ended, using the same formula as the ranking. A stated bill credit is taken off the first year only. Which offers are conditional is recorded in offers.json and decided by a person reading the offer's own fine print; the wording is on each offer's evidence page.

How PSC complaints are counted

Alongside the pricing charts the Commission publishes a Gas Marketer Scorecard, one page a month, counting the complaints it received about each certificated marketer in three categories: billing, service and deceptive marketing. The tables here show each marketer's total over the trailing 24 published months (October 2024 to September 2026), and each marketer's own page breaks that down by category and by month, linking every month to the PSC page it came from. Where the PSC leaves a cell empty it means zero, and it is read as zero here.

Two things the number is not. It is not per customer: the PSC publishes no customer counts, so a marketer with a larger book collects more complaints for the same standard of service, and no normalisation is possible from public data. And it is not part of the ranking. Plans are ordered by estimated annual cost and by nothing else; the complaint column sits beside that ordering and never moves a row. The scorecard lags the pricing charts by about six weeks, so the newest complaint month is usually older than the newest rate month.
